PROGRAM SETUP
Print a copy of the file GETSTART.TXT for instructions for setting up the sound card signal levels.
NEW SINCE VERSION 1.5
1. The program can now load images with the PNG file extension. This is a newer file type appearing on CompuServe.
2. An option for a software prefilter is now included. Since this uses about 320K of memory and a fair amount of computer time, the OPTIONS menu allows you to select the ability to have a single (4 pole) or double (8 pole) bandpass prefilter. Within the RECEIVE dialog box is a button to actually turn the filter on or off. This can be changed during reception without causing any timing errors in the picture. For installations with a high speed computer using a double filter provides the most QRM rejection. Slower computers should select the 11025 sample rate for the sound card and use a single filter. If your tranceiver has DSP or you are using an auxilliary DSP audio filter, the prefilter will not have a major effect on QRM rejection.
3. In version 1.5 some multitasking actions resulted in picture breakup. Version 1.6 greatly reduces the incidence of this.
4. When transmitting the picture no longer wipes to gray. Instead a red line tracks the transmission progress.
DEFAULT IMAGE DIRECTORY
When you first run the program you should establish a default directory for the storage of images. Load any image usig the File menu "Open" command and then use the File menu "Save As" command. Within the dialog box, you can select the directory and the image format ( file extension ). After the image is saved, the settings you used will also be recorded and will become the new default location and format for images saved by the "Save" command or the autosave function.
ENHANCED TEXT ENTRY
Since the manual was printed, the text entry has been expanded to include both SHADOW and EXTRUSION of the text. The later gives a 3D effect. The shadow or the extrusion can now be either up or down and to the right.
GVA VIS CONFLICT
Pasokon Version 3 has assigned VIS 114 to the P5 mode. The chart in the manual shows a VIS of 116. The 114 VIS code was being used by GVA 125 but, since GVA 125 and 250 will likely be discontinued in any future version of WinPix Pro, the conflict is being resolved by assigning an odd parity setting to the GVA mode rather than the standard even parity. In this manner, the P5 and GVA 125 modes can coexist.
SOUND CARD IRQ CONFLICTS
For WinPix Pro to function properly it is essential that your sound card is operating properly under Windows. The default IRQ setting for most sound cards is IRQ 5. This is also the default used by the Pasokon card. If this card or any other has a conflict with the sound card IRQ change the IRQ jumper on the sound card and reinstall the sound card software using the new IRQ. If the sound card can record and playback ".WAV" files created using a Windows recorder program supplied with the card, it should be ready to work with WinPix Pro. WinPix Pro does NOT use ".WAV" files but it does use the same commands to Windows to control the sound card.
VBX CONFLICTS
VBX files are used by a number of commercial programs to add capabilities and enhance the appearance of Window programs. These file are loaded into your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory where any program can access them. When Winpix Pro installs it checks the date (version) of these files before overwriting them to insure that it does not replace a newer file with an older one. We have encountered install programs that do not check dates and as a result it is always possible that a Windows program you install after WinPix Pro could replace one of these files with a version which is incompatable with WinPix Pro. The usual symptom of such a problem is an error message at the time you bring down a dialog box in WinPix Pro. To verify the problem you can check the dates on the VBX files on the WinPix Pro disk against those in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory. If ANY of the three VBX files used by WinPix Pro in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory are older, just reinstall WinPix Pro. Three VBX files are used by WinPix Pro. They are: THREED.VBX, SPIN.VBX, and MHSL200.VBX.
256 COLOR VIDEO
Since many of you have not been concerned with having High Color or True Color in Windows, make sure that you are not still running in 256 colors. Use the About box in the Help menu. It will tell you the video card's settings under Windows. Yes! It has happened to more than one of you and the pictures can be rather ugly in the 256 color mode.
SCOTTIE DX
If you transmit Scottie DX ( SCOTTIE 5DX ) and the receiving station says his system triggered the AVT 188 mode it is not the fault of WinPix Pro. A VIS conflict exists and some systems must still force the selection of Scottie DX rather than rely on some automatic means of resolving the VIS conflict. Read the discussion in the manual for an explanation of the VIS conflict between the Scottie DX and AVT 188 modes.
